A Brief History of Action Man
Action Man was first introduced to the UK market in 1966 by toy company Palitoy, inspired by the American G.I. Joe range launched by Hasbro in the early 1960s. Initially dressed in military uniforms, Action Man quickly evolved to include sports, rescue, and adventure themes, becoming a mainstay in British toy boxes for nearly two decades.
After Palitoy ceased production in 1984, the brand saw several revivals:
-
Hasbro (1993 - 2006) reimagined Action Man for a new generation.
-
Modellers Loft (2006 - 2010) catered to collectors with limited edition releases.
-
Art + Science (2016 - present) reintroduced classic designs for nostalgia-driven audiences.
This long legacy, spanning almost 60 years, has created a rich and varied collecting scene - one that Cullens of Surrey is proud to support!
Record Sales and Collecting Highlights
Some Action Man items have far surpassed expectations on the auction block. In 2015, for example, a rare Action Man judo outfit sold for an astonishing £5,400, highlighting just how valuable certain accessories and uniforms can be.
Among the most in-demand sets are the Action Footballer figures, which came dressed in team kits and tracksuits from clubs like Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton. These club-specific releases are now especially prized by both football fans and collectors.

Fun Fact
In 2020, a limited edition Bobby Moore Action Man figure was launched, with just 1,966 units produced - a small nod to England’s historic World Cup win. A portion of the proceeds (£6 per sale) went to support the Bobby Moore Fund, part of Cancer Research UK.
Collecting Action Force Carded Figures
A key offshoot of the Action Man line is the Action Force series, which brought a new scale and storyline to the Action Man brand in the early 1980s. Produced by Palitoy, Action Force figures were smaller (3.75-inch scale, similar to Star Wars and G.I. Joe figures) and came carded rather than boxed.
These carded Action Force figures - including characters like Z Force, SAS, Q Force, and Red Shadows - are now hugely collectable, especially in mint-on-card (MOC) condition. Key points of interest for collectors include:
-
Card variants (Palitoy vs Hasbro-branded cards)
-
Unpunched cards (no hole for retail peg display)
-
Factory-sealed bubbles and intact blister packs
-
Rare characters or short production runs
Due to their fragility and age, pristine carded Action Force figures can be hard to come by and often attract strong interest at auction.
