Star Wars Collections Auction
Being one of the most well-known and marketed film franchises ever made, Star Wars toys and memorabilia have been dominating shops for years. From Darth Vader to Yoda, these sought-after characters are familiar to most. It is no surprise that collectors have invested in a number of Star Wars-related items over time, especially considering the nostalgia attached to toys based on the original trilogy.
Our experienced team at Cullens of Surrey are passionate fans of Star Wars, dealing with collections for auction with enthusiasm and extensive knowledge. Whether you’re buying or selling, our commitment to items from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away knows no limits.
Background Information
The Star Wars franchise was created by American George Lucas, who released “Star Wars” in 1977, which was later retitled “Star Wars - A New Hope”. Lucas initially did not predict the success and influence Star Wars would have on the world, only planning for a single film. However, the popularity led to its renaming and the eventual expansion to further films, including a prequel trilogy which started in 1999, and a sequel trilogy where the first film aired in 2015.
There are now 9 films from the “Skywalker Saga”, alongside the standalone films “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) and “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (2018), and countless animated and live-action TV series, which Disney now owns. Disney plans to expand the current storylines we’re all familiar with, as well as introduce new characters and eras, which in time will certainly lead to more toys, games and memorabilia.
High-Value Sales
Over the years, auction houses across the UK and beyond have received a huge number of Star Wars toys and collectables, a lot of which have turned out to be very valuable. Those which were released around the time of the original film are particularly valuable, symbolic of the rise of the films from then onwards. Perhaps the most expensive of them all is the “Rocket Launcher Boba Fett” prototype action figure, which one very lucky owner managed to sell for a massive $150,000 (£120,321)! Regarded as the “rarest, greatest Star Wars action figure in the world”, this 1979 Kenner toy was never actually put into mass production, instead it was displayed at the Kenner Booth in the 1979 New York Toy Fair.
At Cullens of Surrey, we’re no stranger to a large Star Wars collection. In March 2024, we acquired what could potentially be the largest Star Wars collectables collection in the South of England. This featured over 5,000 items from the popular galactic franchise, ranging from the 1970s to 2010, which were included in our recent huge auction for toys. Within this collection were items such as Star Wars action figures, vehicle models, Lego Star Wars sets and posters from the films.
Fun Fact
General Tips for Star Wars Collections - Buying and Selling
-
Are the items boxed, and if so, what is the quality of this box? Star Wars items that are still boxed (or have the box to hand) are typically worth more, especially if the box is in good to mint condition. This isn’t a necessity but is certainly a bonus.
-
In what state is the product itself? It is natural for older figures to become discoloured over time, but those that have minimal colour fading and have been looked after well are usually much more valuable
-
Consider the edition of the items; could it be considered a “limited edition”? The majority of the most valuable collectables are limited-edition items since there are few remakes available, therefore bringing a greater demand for collectors.
-
How genuine does the item seem? Check for any parts of the item which could indicate it is fake, such as the colours. Use online comparisons to genuine versions. The box (if it has one) should be free from spelling mistakes, with crisp printing.
