Sporting Memorabilia Auctions

Sporting idols dominate mainstream media around the world, as they have done for quite some time. The fame and stardom that comes with being a popular athlete helps make sporting memorabilia a lucrative commodity in auction houses. Signed goods from significant events and eras are highly sought after in auction houses up and down the UK.

At Cullens of Surrey, we handle our fair share of sporting items and collectables, expertly valuing them to sell in our online auctions. If you’re someone looking to expand your vintage football jersey collection, searching for signed Formula 1 merchandise, or collecting classic posters of your golfing icons, you’re in the right place!

Background Information

Sporting memorabilia is defined as any signed or used sporting goods, such as match-worn jerseys, as well as more general sports items such as trading cards, posters, photos and autographs from significant sporting eras and historical sporting events and figures. People often obtain these goods through auctions, where particularly valuable items do come up from time to time.

Memorabilia from several sports stars are particularly sought after, such as Babe Ruth, Mike Tyson, Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and so on. Typically, the more fame and success that is attached to a given sporting legend, the more valuable memorabilia associated with them is.

High-Value Sales

We’ve mentioned some of the most popular athletes for sporting memorabilia, so how much do signed goods associated with them sell for at auction? Perhaps one of the most expensive cases in recent times is the Michael Jordan 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey, which sold for just over $10 million (£7.8 million) in 2022. The jersey was worn by Jordan during the famed “Last Dance” season for the Chicago Bulls, where he helped the Bulls achieve a 6th title in just 8 years.

There are numerous sports-based trading cards which have sold for huge sums of money over the years. In 2022, a trading card of baseball legend Mickey Mantle sold for $12.6 million (£9.8 million) at an auction in the USA, making it the most expensive sports-based trading card to date. This mint-edition, 1952 trading card by Topps was originally purchased for $50,000 (£39,000) back in 1991 by New Jersey waste management entrepreneur Anthony Giordano - quite the profit.

Fun Fact

A particularly high-valued piece of sports memorabilia with a strange backstory is the Diego Maradona “Hand of God” Argentina football jersey. The jersey, which sold for $9.28 million (£7.27 million) in a London-based auction house in 2022, was worn during Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarter-final victory over England, where Maradona infamously scored past Peter Shilton by using his hand.

What makes this jersey more significant is that it was chosen by Maradona himself before the match; the previous cotton jerseys worn during the tournament were too heavy in the Mexican sun, so short-term replacements were needed. Two new kits were made, one of which was decided by Maradona who claimed “We’ll beat England in that one” - and he would prove to be right.

General Tips for Sporting Memorabilia - Buying and Selling

If you’re looking to start collecting sporting memorabilia from an auction, or you’re considering selling any current items that you own, there are a few useful things to know to make sure you’re getting a fair deal and maximise the sale price:
  • Certificate of Authenticity: If you’re buying or selling a signed piece of memorabilia, the presence of a Certificate of Authenticity is important; it confirms the legitimacy of the item, giving the buyer confidence that the item is genuine.
  • Set Your Budget: If you’re looking to buy sporting memorabilia, determine your maximum bid beforehand and stick to it. In the excitement of an auction, it is easy to go above your realistic budget, especially during a bidding war!
  • Consider the Quality: Items that are presented well and of a higher quality will be worth more. This is important for those selling sporting memorabilia, but also just as important for buyers who want the best quality items as possible.
  • Consider Market Trends: Keep an eye on market trends and the popularity of specific athletes or types of memorabilia. If you’re looking to buy, wait for off-peak times when prices may be lower. For those looking to sell, times of higher demand may bring greater valuations.
