Tips for Buying Retro Games Consoles at Auction
Buying a retro games console at auction can be an exciting way to find classic systems, but it's worth checking the details of each lot before you bid.
Check the Condition
Check What Is Included
Confirm whether the lot includes the original controller, cables, power supply, games, accessories or packaging. For cartridge systems, dead save batteries are common in SNES, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy games and are worth checking for if saved progress matters to you.
Look for Boxed and Complete Items
Original packaging and accessories are particularly appealing to collectors, so check the photographs to see exactly what accompanies the console.
Research Before You Bid
Differences between models, releases and regional versions can affect both collectability and value. PAL and NTSC versions of the same console are not interchangeable, so check which you're bidding on.
Set Your Budget
Decide your limit before bidding starts and account for the buyer's premium and any other charges. If the console may need servicing or replacement parts, factor that in too.
Understand the Auction Terms
Check bidding deadlines, payment, collection and delivery arrangements, and whether the console is described as tested, partially tested or sold untested. Our guide to buying at auctioncovers the process in full.
Tips for Selling Retro Games Consoles at Auction
A little preparation helps your consoles reach the right bidders. Our specialists handle the cataloguing and description, but there are a few things worth knowing before your items come to us.
Don’t Clean or Restore It
Leave your console as you found it. Retrobrighting, respraying and attempted repairs frequently reduce value, because collectors want original, unmodified hardware. Light dusting is fine; anything more should wait until a valuer has seen it.
Remove the Batteries
Check consoles, controllers and handhelds for old alkaline batteries and take them out. Cells left in storage leak and corrode the contacts, and that damage is often difficult or impossible to reverse. This is the single most common avoidable problem we see in collections that have been in a loft or garage.
Keep Original Packaging and Accessories
Boxes, manuals, controllers, cables, memory cards and games all add collector interest. Keep them with the console they belong to rather than sorting them into separate piles, and leave save data on memory cards intact.
Consider the Timing of Your Sale
Demand varies by console and collection. Our team can advise on the most suitable auction format and when to enter your items.

Retro Games Consoles FAQs
Collectability can depend on several factors, including rarity, condition, age, edition, and whether the original box, controllers, manuals, and other accessories are present. Particular games, colourways and limited releases can also attract collector interest.
Original packaging can make a retro console more appealing to collectors, particularly when the box and accessories are in good condition. However, the value of an individual console depends on a range of factors, so a valuation is the best way to establish its potential auction value.
Yes. If you have original games, controllers, cables, manuals or other accessories that belong with a console, keep them together where possible. Complete collections can be particularly interesting to collectors and should be included when arranging a valuation.
Yes. You don't need to sell each console individually. Larger collections of consoles, games and accessories can be assessed for auction, with our team able to advise on how your items could be presented and catalogued.
A valuation considers factors such as the make and model, rarity, condition, completeness and current collector demand. The presence of original packaging, accessories and games can also be relevant when assessing an item or collection.
A console does not necessarily need to be fully working to be considered for auction. However, its working condition should be accurately described, along with any faults or missing components. If you're unsure about an item, our specialists can advise you during the valuation process.
